The Sasol Mainstream Programme offers performance-based bursaries with a work-back/pay-back commitment. This comprehensive bursary is available to talented individuals seeking full-time undergraduate/postgraduate studies in specified Engineering, Science, and Technology fields on a national level.

Applicants must be South African citizens, currently enrolled or eligible for enrollment at an approved South African University for the upcoming academic year.

Applications are open for undergraduate degree programs (no diplomas) in the following areas of study:

  • Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. / B.Sc.)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry (Hons. requirement for Sasol)
  • Civil Engineering
  • Data Science (Computer Science / Mathematics / Operations Research / Statistics)
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Geology (Hons. requirement for Sasol)
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgy (Hons. requirement for Sasol)
  • Mining Engineering – Undergraduate Studies (B. Eng. Tech.)

Undergraduate Studies (B. Eng. Tech.)

For eligibility for the Sasol Mainstream Undergraduate bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Registered or eligible for registration at an approved South African university for the upcoming academic year
  • Bursaries are available to talented individuals pursuing full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in selected Engineering, Science, and Technology fields on a national level.

Application Criteria for Undergraduates pursuing B.Eng. and B.Sc. degrees:

  • Level 6: 70-79% in Mathematics
  • Level 6: 70-79% in Physical Science
  • Level 5: 60-69% in English First Additional language or
  • Level 5: 60-69% in English home language or
  • Level 4: 50-59% in English

Second Additional language General application criteria for current university students:

  • First-year students should apply with their Grade 12 results.
  • Second-year students applying for the third year should submit their first-year results.
  • Third-year students applying for the fourth year/Hons. should provide their second-year results.
  • Hons. students applying for Masters should present their third-year results.
  • Master students applying for PhD should submit their Hons. results.
  • Undergraduate and Hons. students must achieve 50% or higher to meet the minimum criteria.

Application criteria for current university undergraduate students (Academic year 1, 2, 3, 4, and Hons):

  • A minimum of 50% is required for all courses the student was enrolled in during the previous academic year.
  • Students pursuing a degree they are seeking a bursary for must adhere to the minimum study period for that degree (e.g., 4 years for an engineering degree).
  • Extended study periods or plans for an extended degree course are not eligible for bursary consideration.
  • Bursary applications must be for full-time studies at an accredited South African university, excluding the University of South Africa (UNISA).
  • No bursaries are granted for University of Technology studies, except for Mine Surveying.

Current university postgraduate students (applying for Masters/PhD):

  • A minimum of 65% is required for all courses the student was enrolled in during the previous academic year.

To be eligible for the Sasol Foundation bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Have acceptance or provisional acceptance to a South African university or University of Technology for the upcoming academic year
  • Combined Household Income must be less than 600,000 per annum
  • Attained a minimum of 60% in all subjects
  • Non-STEM bursaries are reserved for qualifying Children of Sasol Employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo Shareholders, or Candidates from Sasol Fence-line communities.

Additional Notes:

  • Financially needy and academically competitive candidates will be given priority during selection.
  • Selected individuals must be open to interviews and psychometric assessments.
  • Grade 12 applicants must submit their Grade 11 final results, while other applicants should provide end-of-year results for the respective Grade 12 completion year.
  • Applicants previously enrolled in a Higher Learning Institution can use their end-of-year results for their application.

What does the Sasol Bursary cover?

Sasol Mainstream Undergraduate Bursaries include:

  • Coverage for registration fees
  • Tuition fees (excluding repeat modules)
  • Pocket money
  • Meal allowance
  • Accommodation expenses (equivalent to the average single room rate at the student’s university residence)
  • A one-time Computer and Calculator allowance
  • Work opportunities with a payback obligation
  • Development prospects such as possible vacation work post-2nd and 3rd academic year
  • Mental health support like student discussions and workshops.

Fees for tuition, registration, and exams are paid directly to the university, while accommodation fees are also paid to the university for on-campus housing. Students must cover costs for repeat subjects. If students opt for off-campus housing, they receive funds for accommodation and meals as per university rates. Book and pocket money go directly to the student, and payments are made twice yearly at the start of each semester. Successful applicants receive detailed payment instructions post-bursary award.
