Job Description:
Security Officers at the University of Johannesburg serve as the initial contact for all incoming individuals. This role involves ensuring professional security measures to protect assets, property, staff, students, and visitors within the university’s vicinity.
Responsibilities:
Security Services
- Safeguard UJ’s property, staff, students, and visitors through physical patrols and access control.
- Enforce security policies among students, staff, and visitors.
- Check and report any issues with physical security infrastructure like gates and lighting.
- Patrol the university grounds to prevent intrusions and ensure the security of doors, windows, and gates.
- Respond promptly to emergency incidents as directed by the control room.
- Preserve crime scenes until supervisors arrive.
- Complete necessary documentation for specific incidents.
- Provide accurate verbal and written reports of incidents.
- Monitor and operate electronic security systems when needed.
- Conduct initial investigations into reported offenses.
- Escort staff during night shifts.
- Respond to security incidents as directed by supervisors or control room operators.
- Document all incidents and prepare concise and accurate reports.
- Identify and store abandoned bags during shift changes.
- Conduct searches as necessary.
- Manage key safeguarding and issuance.
- Maintain an administrative system for lost and found items.
- Enforce compliance with the university’s SOPs, rules, regulations, and policies.

Access Control
- Verify all personnel access permits, visitor’s permits, and vehicle permits.
- Conduct searches of bags and vehicles in accordance with standard operating procedures based on risk rating.
- Validate material removal permits and confirm content and authorization signature.
- Secure gates and doors by locking them after hours.
Customer Services
- Provide a friendly, helpful, and efficient protection service to all staff, students, and visitors.
- Perform duties related to events, open days, demonstrations, and respond to incidents as instructed by senior personnel.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor when interacting with clients.

Health and Safety
- Assist in emergency situations like fires or medical incidents as the initial response.
- Use security and personal protective equipment following departmental protocols, ensuring cleanliness and proper storage, and report any malfunctions to senior personnel.
Professional Development
- Complete necessary staff training and seek guidance from senior personnel as needed.

Minimum qualifications required:
- Grade 12, Matric, or NQF4 equivalent
- Grade C PSIRA registration
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft software
- Clearance from South African Police Services
- Valid Driver’s License
- At least 2 years of security services experience
- Suitable levels of medical, psychological, and physical fitness for the job duties
Working Conditions:
- Shift work required based on University operations, potentially involving 24/7/365 schedules such as day shifts, night shifts, and alternating shifts.
- Possible need to travel between different work sites. Uniform wearing and working in varied weather conditions.
Recommendations:
- Applicants with NQF5 security/risk management qualifications preferred.
- Applicants familiar with Impro Portal, Nimbus, and video management systems preferred.
- Applicants with background in educational or corporate campus security environment preferred.
- Applicants possessing a Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP) preferred.
- Applicants with higher PSIRA Grades or Accreditation (e.g. Grade A or B, Armed Reaction) preferred.
- Applicants holding a valid SAPS firearm competency certificate preferred.
- Applicants with training/experience in firefighting and first aid preferred.
